What Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention Really Looks Like (And Why It Matters)

What Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention Really Looks Like

Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention is not an abstract concept to me. Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention is personal, lived, tested at my kitchen table, and proven across decades of my life, my family, and the students we serve at 3D Learning Experts.

I am Dyslexic. My husband is Dyslexic. Three of my four children have Dyslexia. I did not learn to read until I was nine years old, after receiving Orton-Gillingham instruction at my private school in the early 1980s. That experience shaped everything I believe about reading, instruction, and what actually works.

This is why I am very clear about what Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention truly looks like.

What Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention Really Means

Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention is grounded in research, not trends. It has existed for over 100 years and is supported by the science of reading and decades of peer-reviewed studies.
Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention means instruction that:
  • Is supported by decades of peer-reviewed research
  • Produces consistent, measurable reading gains
  • Uses explicit, systematic, structured literacy instruction
  • Aligns with how the Dyslexic brain processes language
Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention does not rely on guessing, memorization, or exposure alone. It teaches reading directly, intentionally, and sequentially.
I have lived the difference between instruction that helps and instruction that changes lives.
For families wanting to understand the research foundation, the International Dyslexia Association outlines what qualifies as evidence-based reading instruction: https://dyslexiaida.org/structured-literacy/

Why Structured Literacy and Orton-Gillingham Matter

Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention is built on structured literacy. Orton-Gillingham is not a single program. It is an instructional approach grounded in explicit phonics, sound-symbol relationships, syllable types, morphology, and spelling rules taught in a systematic and cumulative way.
All Orton-Gillingham-based programs are not created equal.
Some provide a foundation. Others provide depth.
Any Orton-Gillingham instruction is better than none. However, the distinction matters, especially for students with moderate to severe Dyslexia.
Research from organizations such as the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity reinforces the importance of structured literacy for Dyslexic learners: https://dyslexia.yale.edu/resources/educators/instruction/
How Barton Changed My Family’s Trajectory
Before the Barton Reading and Spelling System, my husband Ronnie struggled in a way most people never saw.
After the 2008 financial debacle, new licensing requirements were put in place for mortgage lenders. Ronnie had been a successful mortgage lender for over ten years. He knew his field. He understood the work. The problem was not intelligence or experience. The problem was reading. The licensing exam was written at an eighth-grade reading level. Ronnie could not read at that level at the time. He failed the exam several times, despite his professional success. I began tutoring him using Barton. It took a year and a half of consistent Orton-Gillingham instruction. Ronnie progressed to a ninth-grade reading level. He passed the exam with flying colors.
That outcome was not luck. That was Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention doing exactly what it is designed to do.
Orton-Gillingham and Barton Also Supported My Children

My youngest son, Sammy, received one year of Orton-Gillingham instruction through the Scottish Rite program in Texas. It was delivered in a group setting at school. When his Dyslexia teacher learned we were moving back West and that I planned to homeschool, she strongly recommended I become trained in an Orton-Gillingham program. Since I would be his primary teacher, learning how to teach him correctly made perfect sense.

The Scottish Rite program helped Sammy. It gave him important foundational skills. When I later trained in Barton, I could clearly see that Barton offered significantly more depth, especially in spelling and language structure. Sammy was my first student, and we did not complete the full program. Even so, the system was strong enough to give him confidence and a genuine love for reading. When I tested him during his tenth-grade year, he was reading at an eleventh-grade level.

My daughter completed the Scottish Rite program before we left Texas. When I discovered how much more comprehensive Barton was, I insisted on tutoring her as well. At first, she was reluctant. That hesitation faded quickly once she experienced the difference between what she had previously learned and what Barton instruction could offer her.
She noticed the difference herself. That mattered.
Why Multisensory Instruction Is Non-Negotiable
Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention always includes multisensory instruction.
When students say the sound, see the symbol, and write or build the word, the brain forms stronger neural connections. Dyslexia is a language-based neurological difference. Multisensory instruction directly supports how the Dyslexic brain learns, stores, and retrieves language.
This is not an enhancement. This is a requirement.

Red Flags Families Should Watch For
After decades in this field, I urge families to be cautious when an intervention:
  • Promises fast results without showing data
  • Focuses on accommodations without skill development
  • Uses vague language instead of instructional precision
  • Does not employ instructors who are experts in Dyslexia
Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention is transparent, accountable, and measurable.
How We Deliver Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention at 3D Learning Experts
At 3D Learning Experts, we provide Evidence-Based Dyslexia Intervention through structured, multisensory Orton-Gillingham instruction delivered with integrity.
Our work includes:
  • Comprehensive assessments to identify specific reading and spelling needs
  • Structured, multisensory Orton-Gillingham-based instruction
  • Ongoing data tracking to monitor progress and guide instruction
  • Clear documentation that families, schools, and reviewers can trust
As the owner, director, and former tutor, I oversee this work through both professional expertise and lived experience. I know what ineffective instruction costs families. I also know what happens when instruction is done right.
