Transformative Homeschooling: A Game-Changer for Struggling Students

Homeschooling can transform the learning experience for neurodiverse students facing academic challenges.

Are you a parent who feels exhausted from your child’s daily homework tantrums? Does the thought of traditional schooling failing your child concern you? Homeschooling may be the empowering solution you need!

Three of my four children have Dyslexia, and all four have a total of eight neurodiversities, including Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Autism, and more. In case you’re unfamiliar, Dyslexia involves difficulty with reading, spelling, and word retrieval—from decoding written words to remembering sight words or expressing thoughts in writing. It was heartbreaking to see my children’s needs unmet at school. The traditional educational system often fails students with learning challenges like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia.

Why Homeschooling Changed Everything for My Family

Very few U.S. teachers are adequately trained to support students with Dyslexia. Many even blame parents, saying things like, “You’re not reading enough to them,” while parents read nightly. Worse, students are often embarrassed in front of their peers, harming their self-esteem.

Homeschooling provided a breakthrough. In 2009, I began homeschooling my third-youngest child. After moving back to Las Vegas—which at the time had one of the lowest-performing districts in the nation—I homeschooled my youngest as well. I was nervous—how would I teach a profoundly Dyslexic son? But I didn’t let fear stop me.

Homeschooling Success Stories: Proof It Works

Homeschooling changed my children’s lives:

  • My youngest went from barely reading or doing math to reading at an 11th-grade level in 10th grade and completing Algebra before graduation. Today, he is finishing his two-year Culinary Arts certification program at the same community college Guy Fieri attended and works three days a week at a café for Autistic adults.
  • My second-youngest graduated a year early and became a shop instructor. By 18, he was a certified welder teaching both children and adults.
  • My daughter homeschooled her final two years of high school, then immediately attended cosmetology and make-up school. After that, she went on to the local community college for fashion design, where she met her now-husband while in college. Today, they are raising their family, and she is a performer using the skills she developed along the way—hair, make-up, dance, singing, and fashion.

5 Powerful Benefits of Homeschooling for Struggling Students

1. Freedom to Learn Creatively

The years my kids were homeschooling were incredible! We had the freedom to design our own schedule—learning history through field trips, listening to audiobooks over breakfast, and choosing unique P.E. classes like horseback riding, archery, fencing, and Parkour.

2. Strong Homeschooling Community

Who says homeschooled kids lack socialization? Park Days, dances, and co-op classes helped my children build lifelong friendships. In fact, my son met his girlfriend of several years at a homeschool Halloween dance.

3. Personalized Instruction

Homeschooling allows for individualized, one-on-one teaching—vital for children with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, or Autism. Direct, systematic instruction in reading, spelling, and math is nearly impossible in traditional classrooms of 30–40 students.

4. Interest-Led Learning

Your child can pursue their passions, whether that’s art, robotics, or music, while still covering core academics.

5. No Harmful Comparisons

Homeschooled children aren’t constantly measured against neurotypical peers, which reduces anxiety and boosts confidence.

Is Homeschooling Right for Your Family?

Many parents worry about socialization or their ability to teach. But homeschooling doesn’t mean doing it alone. You can:

  • Hire a tutor
  • Join a homeschool co-op
  • Enroll in online programs
  • Equip your child to become an independent learner

My mother, once critical of homeschooling, completely changed her view after seeing the benefits for my kids.
