The Ultimate California Homeschool Guide for Parnets of Neurodivergent Children

The Ultimate California Homeschool Guide for Parnets of Neurodivergent Children

California Homeschool Options give families the freedom to create an education that truly fits their child instead of expecting their child to fit into one educational model.

For parents raising children with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, ADHD, Autism, and other neurodiversities, homeschooling can provide the flexibility to teach at a child’s individual pace while offering the personalized support they deserve.

As both a veteran homeschool parent and America’s Dyslexia Expert, I’ve watched homeschooling transform the lives of countless families over the past two decades. When children are taught in ways that match how their brains learn best, confidence grows, anxiety decreases, and learning becomes enjoyable again.

One of the questions I hear most often is:

“What are the best California homeschool options for my child?”

The answer depends on your family’s goals, budget, desired level of support, and how much flexibility you want. Fortunately, California offers several excellent homeschool paths.

California Homeschool Options at a Glance

California families can legally homeschool through one of three primary methods.

California Homeschool Option Best For Funding Flexibility
Public Charter Homeschool Families wanting financial assistance and educational guidance Charter instructional funds Moderate
Private School Affidavit (PSA) Families wanting complete independence Self-funded Very High
Private Satellite Program (PSP) Families wanting community and administrative support Self-funded High

Each of these California homeschool options offers unique benefits depending on your child’s educational needs.

California Public Charter Homeschool

For many families, Public Charter Homeschool offers the perfect balance between flexibility and support.

Students learn primarily at home while working with a credentialed supervising teacher. Most charter schools provide annual instructional funds that families can use toward approved curriculum, educational materials, enrichment opportunities, and approved educational vendors.

One of the biggest advantages is that many charter schools allow families to use those funds for specialized intervention services.

At 3D Learning Experts, we are proud to be approved vendors with:

  1. Horizon Charter School
  2. The Cottonwood School
  3. South Sutter Charter School
  4. Granite Mountain Charter School
  5. Sky Mountain Charter School
  6. Ocean Grove Charter School
  7. Epic California Academy

These partnerships allow many California homeschool families to use their charter instructional funds for specialized one-on-one intervention instead of paying entirely out of pocket.

California Private School Affidavit (PSA)

A Private School Affidavit (PSA) allows parents to establish their own private school in their home.

With a PSA, parents have complete control over:

  1. Curriculum
  2. Daily schedule
  3. Teaching methods
  4. Educational philosophy
  5. Student records
  6. Attendance
  7. Graduation requirements

Families fund their own educational expenses, however they also enjoy the highest level of educational freedom.

For many experienced homeschool families, this is one of the most flexible California homeschool options available.

California Private Satellite Programs (PSPs)

A Private Satellite Program (PSP), sometimes called an umbrella school, allows families to homeschool under the administration of an established private school.

Most PSPs assist with:

  1. Attendance records
  2. Student records
  3. Transcripts
  4. Graduation documentation
  5. Parent mentoring
  6. Field trips
  7. Clubs
  8. Enrichment classes
  9. Homeschool community

Many PSPs are Christian, although California also has many excellent secular PSPs.

Families maintain the freedom to choose the curriculum that best fits their child while enjoying additional support and community.

Choosing the Right Homeschool Curriculum

One mistake I see many parents make is believing they have to teach every subject themselves.

You don’t.

In fact, I encourage families to simplify homeschooling whenever possible.

Children with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, ADHD, Autism, and other neurodiversities often benefit from specialists teaching the subjects that require explicit, structured, multisensory instruction.

At 3D Learning Experts, we can teach:

  1. English Language Arts
  2. History
  3. Math

That leaves parents responsible for only:

  1. Science
  2. Physical Education

This approach significantly reduces your teaching load while ensuring your child receives expert instruction where it matters most.

The Homeschool Curriculum I Recommend

Parents regularly ask me:

“What homeschool curriculum should I use?”

There isn’t one perfect curriculum for every child.

The best curriculum depends on your child’s strengths, challenges, interests, and educational goals.

That’s why we’ve created a list of homeschool curricula we recommend for California families.

Homeschooling Doesn’t Mean Doing Everything Yourself

One of the biggest misconceptions about homeschooling is that parents have to become experts in every subject.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

The most successful homeschool families I’ve worked with build a team around their child. They partner with specialists, choose curriculum intentionally, connect with homeschool communities, and focus on creating joyful learning experiences.

There is no prize for doing everything yourself.

There is tremendous value in recognizing where your child needs additional support and allowing experts to help.

That gives you more time to enjoy why you chose homeschooling in the first place: strengthening relationships, encouraging your child’s unique gifts, and creating an educational environment where they can truly thrive.
